• Het meest recente project van 'Recht op terugkeer' is de Al Shifaa kliniek in Nahr el Bared en Baddawi. Dit project kwam in een stroomversnelling door de beschieting van het Nahr el Bared kamp van mei tot september 2007. De Al Shifaa kliniek van Nahr el Bared is volledig vernield tijdens de belegering van het kamp. De inwoners van Nahr el Bared vluchtten vooral naar Baddawi waar het medisch centrum Al Shifaa hielp met de opvang en de medische zorgen. Dokter Tawfik en verpleger Melad bleven zolang mogelijk in Nahr el Bared tijdens de beschietingen, dit wil zeggen tot ze onder dreiging van gevangenisstraf moesten vertrekken. Gedurende maanden werkten ze daarna in het Al Shifaa dispensarium in Baddawi. Dokter Tawfik en zijn ploeg zijn nu teruggekeerd naar Nahr el Bared waar ze voorlopig medische consultatie hielden in een gehuurde garage. Ons werkkamp van 2008 heeft de laatste hand gelegd aan de terreinen en de nieuwe gebouwen van het Al Shifaa ziekenhuis. (zie werkkamp 2008)
  

• Onze steun aan het Human Call hospitaal in Ein el Helweh kamp is opgestart in 2006. Ein el Helweh is het grootste kamp in Libanon met ongeveer 75.000 Palestijnen en nog vele duizenden bewoners van andere nationaliteiten. De medische behoeften zijn er zeer groot en het Human Call hospitaal is het enige dat 24u op 24 open is en een spoedopname heeft. De Human Call Association werd in 1986 opgericht als een polykliniek voor eerstelijnszorg. In 1992 werd een hospitaalafdeling ingericht op de 2e verdieping van het gebouw met een operatiezaal en in 1998 kwam de spoedopname tot stand waardoor het hospitaal 24 uur per dag kon werken. Vorig jaar werd een neonatale afdeling geopend met de enige couveuse in het kamp. En op dit ogenblik zijn er grote uitbreidingswerken bezig. Het hospitaal wordt geleid door dokter Amer Sammak, een gedreven en dynamisch man die zijn werk kadert in de Palestijns nationale strijd.

• Onze steun gaat ook naar de Palestinian Youth Centers die in alle kampen een werking hebben (zie www.PYC-lb.com). Zij verzorgen permanente animatie voor jongeren en kinderen, helpen families en verstrekken bijkomend onderwijs omdat de UNRWA scholen overbevolkt zijn en vele kinderen de school verlaten. We werken in het bijzonder met Ein el Helweh, Shatila en Nahr el Bared.
  

  
  • Het centrum van PYC Ein el Helweh is gelegen vlak tegenover het Human Call hospitaal en maakt deel uit van een drieluik voor sociale werking: het hospitaal, het jeugdcentrum en het sociaal hulpcentrum. Tijdens ons jongeren werkkamp van 2007 hebben we dit jeugdcentrum helemaal opgeknapt. Het is een centrum met een grote activiteitenzaal, een fitness-lokaal, een biljartruimte, een ontvangstkamer en een keukentje. Het centrum werkt met jongeren en verzorgt ook zomeropvang voor kinderen. Er is ook een actieve vrouwenwerking

• Het centrum van PYC Shatila richt zich vooral naar opvang van kinderen. In Shatila is de situatie voor de kinderen dramatisch maar de erg energieke animatrice Thaera wil daar iets aan doen. Gelukkig besloot in oktober-november 2006 een groep Belgische leraars permanente steungevers te zoeken om dit centrum opnieuw op te starten. De enige sponsor was overleden en daardoor viel de werking stil. Wij ondersteunen dit project dat in 2007 opnieuw actief werd en dank zij de steunwerving een lerares kon aanwerven en een verdieping boven het schoolklasje kon bijbouwen.
  

• Het centrum van PYC Nahr el Bared speelt een heel belangrijke rol in het zwaar geteisterde en totaal verwoeste kamp. Het is een aantrekkingspool voor jongeren en kinderen en vervult ook een meer algemene opdracht om de teruggekeerde kampbewoners moed en ondersteuning te geven. Ons jongerenwerkkamp van juli 2008 ging door in het PYC-centrum. We beleefden er een fantastische maar tegelijkertijd zeer emotionele werkvakantie. We werkten er samen met een 15-tal Palestijnse jongeren onder leiding van Melad en Yasmine.
  

• De groep 'Recht op terugkeer' begon in 2006 met twee steunprojecten die intussen afgewerkt zijn. Beide projecten waren beperkt in omvang en werden met succes afgerond.
  
  • We verzamelden steun voor een project van de NGO Beit Atfal Assomoud in het Rashediehkamp, helemaal in het Zuiden. Dankzij deze actie kon een oplage schoolboekjes voor kinderen herdrukt worden. Na dit project werd de samenwerking met Beit Atfal Assomoud gestopt omdat deze NGO zich reeds kan beroepen op veel buitenlandse sponsoring, wat helemaal niet het geval is voor onze huidige projecten.
    
  • We stapten in 2006 al over naar steun aan een PYC Center in Syrië, namelijk het jeugdcentrum in Nairabkamp, vlakbij Aleppo. We brachten geld bijeen voor het betalen van een klein computernetwerk van zes PC’s, bestemd voor opleiding van jongeren en kinderen in dit centrum.
    

Stop Israeli urbanicide and genocide in Gaza!

Israel is currently engaging in a full-scale military offensive against the Palestinian Gaza Strip. What happening in Gaza now is terrible, the abuse of force is totally unaccepted by the international communities where no place is safe even an inch of Gaza Strip.

My heart is bleeding when seeing what is happening in Gaza . Since the beginning of the current military operation, 363 Palestinians were killed including 20 children (5.5%) and 18 women (4.9%). 1663 Palestinians were injured including 252 children (15%) and 168 women (10%). The MoH hospitals reported that there are 84 patients in critical conditions, 40 of them are in ICUs and 44 in wards because of the lace of ICU beds. The MoH referred 15 cases to NGO hospitals within less than 72 hours. According to WHO, No patients have been referred for treatment through Erez which has been closed since Friday. Egypt opened the Rafah border for patients to exit. Till now, only 23 injured patients got through Rafah to Egypt. In Gaza nothing is immune, the Israeli occupying forces demolish homes, schools, universities, police stations, civil society organizations and mosques. The war of genocide and urbanicide machine can kill and destroy everything in a very "easy" way. Today, the Israeli forces declare the border areas as closed military zone, the policy of No Mans' land aim to create a wide buffered zone along the Palestinian Israeli borders. A trail of devastation stretches as far as the eye can see to establish a buffer zone allegedly to prevent shelling from local missiles by Palestinian activists; a jumble of demolished buildings, leveled hillsides and flattened forests. This barrage of concentrated damage has been wrought not only by the bombs and tanks of traditional warfare, but also by industrious, vigorous destruction equipment, the bulldozer.

Israeli occupying forces continued to violate the human rights of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Since the beginning of the military operation in December, 27th 2008,, the mass massacres committed with cold blood against the Palestinians persist. Human rights violations that are being committed against us included the use of extra-judicial assassinations and willful killings. Till now, no signs that the cycle of violence will end and the Palestinian is anonymous.

The entire world is witnessing these scandalous and outrageous acts, and yet no concrete step has been taken!!! Unless the international community puts pressure on Israel to stop the mass killing of civilians and the willful destruction of property and infrastructure, the people of Gaza will again be forced to suffer the humiliating and crippling dictates of Israel's military rule. It could also lead to the re-occupation of the entire Gaza Strip.
The Union of Health Work Committees (UHWC) asks you to issue a strong Last Appeal Statement condemning Israel’s human rights violations against the Palestinian people and to demand a cessation of this military offensive. Israel's persistent unilateral attempts to change by force the situation of some 1.5 million Palestinians blatantly contravenes international law and all human rights conventions. Furthermore, they are morally reprehensible. There are no political considerations which can justify the silence of the international community any longer.
Finally, may we jointly continue to challenge the hypocritical silence, because we believe in a just cause and seeking justice at all time, but without pitying or begging for rights, as these rights are internationally recognized, and are valid for Palestinians too!"
